What Is Reflexology And Where Did It Come From?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy which works on the feet or hands to help heal the whole person not just the current symptoms. Dating back to Ancient Egypt, India and China. In 1913 Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as "zone therapy". He noted that reflex areas (part of the central nervous system) were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone. In the 1930s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot was mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Following stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of "imbalance", and these vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing it from functioning effectively. By deeply massaging different areas of the feet the whole body can be influenced and vital channels kept clear. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing, much in the same way as acupuncture but not as invasive.

Who Would Beneift From Reflexology?

Reflexology is ideal for treating stress and preventing stress related problems. Not only does it treat the immediate physical condition but it is also very relaxing thereby helping to treat the root cause of stress and anxiety. It can also bring relief from a wide spectrum of acute and chronic conditions including those related to:

- Stress, depression, anxiety
- PMS, infertility, the menopause
- Digestive disorders eg. constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Sleep disorders, headaches, migraines

- Respiratory conditions, asthma, hayfever

- Musculo- skeletal problems, sports injuries and back pain, and whiplash

- Arthritis
- the list goes on......................

Reflexology can be a treatment in itself or can complement existing prescribed medication or treatment. It can also be used as part of a long term health and fitness plan.  You do not need to have health problems to benefit from Reflexology.

What Happens During The Treatment?

After the initial consultation, you remove your shoes and socks/tights but otherwise remain fully clothed. You sit in a reclining position, relaxed back so that your feet face the therapist. The treatment starts with a foot massage which allows you to relax and open yourself up to the healing process before the reflexology treatment. The therapist uses gentle thumb and finger pressure point massage along the base, sides and top of the feet. This releases any blockages, re-establishes the body's energy flow, thereby encouraging the body to self heal. Following the treatment there is a foot and leg massage for a nice end to a beautifully relaxing treatment.

It must be noted that although some of the benefits of reflexology, such as relaxation, may be felt immediately following treatment, others may take a few treatments. This depends on the length of time the body has been out of balance.

Individual treatments vary considerably but sometimes a course of 4-6 sessions is advisable in order to derive maximum benefits or it might be your monthly health top up.

Illness takes time to develop, so does wellness.
